Is It Worth Ceramic Coating Your Car Before Winter?

As November rolls around on Long Island, detailing tends to become less of a priority for a lot of vehicle owners.  The weather gets colder, the days get shorter, and people start thinking about everything their cars are going to deal with over the next few months.

Ironically, this is one of the best times to consider a ceramic coating.

Winter doesn't make ceramic coating less worthwhile.  It makes the benefits more noticeable.

Why Ceramic Coating Makes Sense Before Winter

The biggest difference I notice between coated and uncoated vehicles during winter isn't necessarily how they look right after a wash.  It's how they look a week or two later.

Ceramic coated vehicles accumulate dirt and road grime more slowly, stay cleaner longer, and are significantly easier to wash when they eventually need attention.

That's especially valuable during a Long Island winter, when road salt, slush, and grime can build up quickly, and opportunities to wash your vehicle become less frequent.

A ceramic coating won't prevent contamination from landing on your paint, but it creates a protective barrier that helps resist that buildup and makes it easier to remove.

Is November the Best Time to Apply a Coating?

There's really no bad time to ceramic coat a vehicle, but generally speaking, the earlier you can protect the paint, the better.

Having a coating installed in November gives it time to cure under better conditions before the worst winter weather arrives.  Ideally, you want that protection in place before months of salt and grime begin accumulating.

That said, timing isn't nearly as important as proper preparation and application conditions.

A clean, controlled workspace, appropriate temperatures in the garage, and keeping the vehicle out of direct sunlight during application matter far more than what month happens to be on the calendar.

If you don't get around to coating your vehicle until January or February, that's perfectly fine too.

You Still Need to Wash Your Car During Winter

Ceramic coatings make maintenance easier, but they don't eliminate it.

I generally recommend washing your vehicle about once a month throughout winter, provided the weather cooperates.

When temperatures dip below freezing, trying to wash a vehicle outdoors with water doesn't make much sense.  But that doesn't mean you have to abandon maintenance until spring.

For anyone maintaining their own vehicle, having a hoseless or rinseless wash option can be extremely useful.  Products like Optimum No Rinse, P&S Absolute, and AMMO Frothe allow you to clean a vehicle with considerably less water than a traditional wash - and in some cases you can ditch the hose altogether.

One trick I use when working in colder weather is warming some water on the stove in the morning, then transferring it into buckets with lids before heading out.  Warm, not boiling.  It makes the process much more comfortable.

Another tip: wearing thin insulating gloves underneath nitrile gloves helps keep your hands warm and dry.

Of course, these methods still require proper technique, and heavily contaminated vehicles may need a more thorough wash first.

Ceramic Coating Doesn't Stop When Winter Starts

One misconception I occasionally encounter is that detailing and ceramic coating installations are strictly warm-weather services.

That's not the case.

At Island Aesthetics, we continue offering ceramic coating installations throughout winter at our heated garage in Bayport, NY.  Vehicles can be dropped off, allowing us to properly wash, prepare, polish, and coat them in a controlled environment regardless of the temperature outside.

Mobile detailing also continues throughout winter whenever conditions allow.  If it's not raining, snowing, or freezing, we're still out working.

Still Thinking About When to Pull the Trigger?

If you've been considering ceramic coating your vehicle, there's no reason to wait until spring simply because winter is approaching.

In fact, getting it done before winter means you'll enjoy some of its most useful benefits during the months when keeping your car clean is most difficult.

Your vehicle will still get dirty.  You'll still need to maintain it.  But having a properly installed ceramic coating makes that process considerably easier while providing an additional layer of protection against the conditions your paint faces every day.

And if winter has already arrived, it's not too late.
