How to Properly Maintain a Ceramic Coated Vehicle (Do’s and Don’ts)

If you’ve invested in a ceramic coating, you already made one of the best decisions for long-term paint protection.  The coating adds gloss, keeps the surface cleaner, and makes maintenance easier.  But even the best coatings still need proper care.  They don’t maintain themselves, and the way you wash and treat the vehicle directly affects how long the coating lasts.

A well-maintained ceramic coating can look incredible for years.  A neglected one can lose performance much faster.  At Island Aesthetics, we spend a lot of time helping customers protect their investment, so here is a straightforward guide to keeping your coating in top shape.

1.  Wash Your Vehicle Regularly

A ceramic coating reduces how often dirt sticks, but it doesn’t stop contamination entirely.  Dust, road grime, pollen, and salt still land on the surface.  Regular washing keeps those contaminants from bonding to the coating.

General recommendations:
• Wash once per month for most daily drivers
• Use a high-quality pH-neutral wash soap
• Rinse thoroughly and dry as soon as possible to avoid water spots

If you drive a work vehicle, something that racks up miles quickly, or you’re often in dusty or dirty environments, washing once per week or every other week is a better target.  On the other hand, if it’s a weekend car that only sees the road a few times a month, you can stretch the intervals a bit.  The key is consistency.

2.  Use a Safe Wash Method

Your wash technique matters just as much as the products you use.  The wrong technique can introduce micro-scratches, even on a coated vehicle.

Safe methods include:
• The two bucket wash method
• Rinseless washing
• The Garry Dean method (yes, that’s really what it’s called and it’s how I’ve been detailing for years now)

All three focus on keeping your wash media clean throughout the process.  That alone makes a huge difference.  Clean mitts, clean towels, and a repeatable process will prevent most swirl marks.  If you’re unfamiliar with any of these methods, there are plenty of step-by-step tutorials on YouTube, and we’ll cover them in future blog posts as well.

3.  Avoid Automatic Car Washes, Even Touchless

Automatic washes are one of the fastest ways to ruin the look of your coating.  The spinning brushes in traditional washes hold dirt from every car before you.  As that dirt drags across the paint, it creates swirls and dulls the surface.

Touchless washes avoid physical contact, but they rely on harsh chemicals that slowly weaken coatings.

If you want to preserve your coating’s gloss and hydrophobics, a proper hand wash is always the better option.  And if you’d rather not wash it yourself, Island Aesthetics offers maintenance programs tailored to ceramic coated vehicles.

4.  Dry With Microfiber Towels Only

Letting the vehicle air dry may seem harmless, but it usually leads to water spots.  Using the wrong towel can also cause marring.

Dry the vehicle with:
• High-quality microfiber towels
• A gentle pat-dry or drag-dry technique
• A leaf blower or air dryer for a touchless method

The goal is to reduce friction and prevent minerals in the water from drying on the surface.

5.  Use a Ceramic Spray Booster

Ceramic coatings stay durable for years, but their slickness and water behavior naturally fade over time.  A ceramic spray booster helps restore that performance.

A simple tip if you wash your own vehicle: mist the booster directly onto your drying towel.  It reduces friction while adding protection in the same step.

At Island Aesthetics, we match customers with booster products that work perfectly with the coatings we install.

6.  Clean Bird Droppings, Bugs, and Tree Sap Quickly

A coating adds resistance, not immunity.  Bird droppings and bug residue are acidic.  Tree sap can harden.  All three can stain or etch the surface if left too long.

If you notice:
• Bird droppings
• Bug guts
• Tree sap

Remove them as soon as possible using a gentle detail spray or a coating-safe booster and a soft microfiber towel.

7.  Avoid Harsh Chemicals and Household Cleaners

Skip anything that is not designed for automotive paint.  That includes:
• Dish soap
• Degreasers
• Wheel acids
• All-purpose cleaners used on paint

These can strip protection or degrade the coating.  Stick to pH-neutral soaps and non-acidic wheel cleaners.

8.  Schedule a Professional Maintenance Detail

Even if you take great care of your vehicle at home, a coated car still benefits from a professional maintenance detail once or twice a year.  Think of it as a deeper reset to keep everything performing like it should.

A maintenance detail typically includes:
• A full decontamination wash
• Iron, tar, or sap removal when needed
• A coating booster or refresh
• A complete inspection of coating performance

This is how you get the full lifespan the coating is capable of.
